Sister Gretchen (banjo, vocal)
One of the two baguettes in the group, Sister Gretchen Bag
joined the
band in
1994. "Lucky for
me, their attitude at the time was if you showed up for rehearsals, you
were in the band," says
Sister Gretchen. In the spring of that same year, Sister G endured the
initial clumsiness of finger
picks, and began her pursuit of the bluegrass style. Sister Gretchen
began piano lessons at age
5, moving on to classical and then jazz guitar at 14. She first bought
a banjo and an accordion
in 1989, but the lure of late nights
in dark smelly bars and loud volume soon beckoned, and Sister G began
playing electric bass
in the rock band Inner Beauty, with then-electric-guitarist Otis Ray
Bag. It was through her
command of the electric bass that Sister G landed her first gig with
the Bagboys, filling in for
Harvey Bag, and the rest is history.
